Putting Chaka in this slot would add another woman being represented this year, and more importantly potentially free up a slot next year for a more diverse selection of R&B, Funk or Soul artists to be nominated.Īnyway, I still need to say I like this year's slate, despite my misgivings on how some of them are getting in. Regardless of what people have said about the Hall and representation, the fact is hip hop hasn't done badly for itself as a genre meanwhile, R&B/Funk/Soul has struggled for years to get traction with nominees, let alone inductees. And if they're this okay with stretching the categories to get in some glaring ommissions, then why not use the slot to finally get Chaka Khan in this year. If they were going to backdoor one of the Performer nominees, then Fela Kuti or, if he hadn't been inducted, Todd Rundgren would have made a lot more sense. If they really wanted to get some rap in via the side category, why not focus on Kool Herc or maybe Africa Bambaataa (although I understand why he may not be getting a nod again anytime soon). LL Cool J seems to have struggled in the voting every year, but he still had a good shot at getting in depending on whether he had the hip-hop vote to himself. LL Cool J getting backdoored: This is the most glaring mistake I can point to this year, and I say this as someone who wanted him inducted this year. Happy to see them both get in, but wish it could have been done in a different way. Scott-Heron never having been nominated makes his induction as an Influence more understandable, although he could have slotted in a while back, during the period when the Hall caught up with singer-songwriters. The fact that Kraftwerk has struggled for years was a problem, but given both Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode got in last year seemed to think their chances were much stronger than ever before. Kraftwerk and Gil Scott-Heron being backdoored: A small complaint on these, as they are artists I wanted to see get in as Performers for many years. Those are just two suggestions that would have helped broaden the diversity of a slate that's already more diverse than any for the Hall in recent memory.

The Hall could have easily slotted Big Mama Thorton over Charley Patton, or Carol Kaye over Randy Rhodes (who entirely feels like a bone tossed to metal fans, to smooth over the heavier Performers getting spanked in the voting two years running). No women in the side categories: Given the push for women in the main performer categories, the fact that none of the artists inducted as Sidemen or Musical Excellence are women seems like a mistake. The fact he was slighted is odd, considering who did get backdoored. Yes, they did get a non-English language act in this year (and I'm not super excited about their choice, as I'll advise below), but Fela is exactly the kind of artist that could be easily honored in the side categories, if not as a performer. No Fela Kuti: Really thought he would get in this year, particularly with the conversations about International coverage for the Hall moving forward.

The fact that they're not using the awards to reward members of the board is an added bonus. The expanded use of the side categories: I don't agree with everything done with them this year, but the Hall has ignored their options to open up the inductees by using the Musical Excellence Award, Early Influences, and Ahmet Ertegun Award for too long. Not the slate I would have picked if given my druthers (I'd have swapped out Carole King for Dionne Warwick, Devo over Rundgren, and I was always rooting for LL Cool J over Jay-Z), but this is a solid lineup that covers as many bases as this diverse lineup of nominees allowed. The Performer Slate: I got it exactly right, at least in terms of the artists picked as Performers (whiffed on the one I thought would be backdoored).
